Disciple Making and Prayer
My passion is disciple making. I want to make disciples and that’s what I really want to do. Why? Because that is the passion of Jesus my Lord, and it is the command of Jesus my Lord, and it is also the example of Jesus my Lord. And so my passion is disciple making. I dream of being a disciple making pastor, I dream of being in a disciple making church, I dream about the culture of disciple making amongst the nations.
But what is disciple making? What does it take?
Well, I am reminded of one reality, there are many things needed for disciple making; a passion for God, an authentic walk with Jesus, a love for people, a desire to evangelize, to disciple and to train up people, all that are necessary. But I’m reminded of one very important element in disciple making, and that is prayer.
I was corresponding with a senior man of faith and we wrote about many things but one statement he wrote really blessed my heart. He said, “I have been praying regularly for you.”
That really blessed me, that really encouraged me, but that also reminded me that disciple making requires a regular faithful prayer for the people God has placed in my life. 1 Thessalonians 1 and verse 2 says, “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers”.
Paul was a successful disciple maker. Why? Well he had good theology, he had the heart of a pastor, but I see here that he was praying for his people, not just regularly, but always.
I want to encourage you today to pray for the people that God has placed in your life, and learn to regularly bless them before the throne of grace. That is what is needed to be a disciple making people. That is the passion, the command and the example of Jesus.
May we be a people of prayer, God bless.
